COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

GIVING BACK TO CONEY ISLAND COMMUNITY& BEYOND

We work diligently to strengthen our community and bring people together for the betterment of our community at large. Whether it is a canned food drive and distribution, a holiday toy giveaway or a communal thanksgiving feast, giving back to our community has grown, and continues to grow, to be a large part of what we do here at the Alliance. Join us and share the joy of giving and witnessing how it positively impacts our vibrant neighborhood.

STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS

The Alliance has adopted a number of initiatives to improve our neighborhood’s streetscapes. We work to beautify and maintain our tree pits through numerous beautification projects in collaboration with our local non-profits including Coney Island Beautification Project and volunteers from our local public schools, merchants and residents, as well as New Yorkers for Parks.

Additionally for the first time in over 20 years, we were able to fundraise for holiday lighting which were placed on Mermaid Avenue & Surf Avenue. Bright lights and the decorations visually enhance our corridors while promoting a greater sense of safety.

Through funding from the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, we worked with multiple stakeholders and organizations to create a brand identity for our corridors through banners and tote bags!

workforce development

The Alliance advocates for greater economic opportunity through various workforce development efforts including job training and job placement services for the community's large and growing population. Each year, the Alliance partners with employers, including Luna Park, Nathan's Famous, Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, and Applebee's Grill & Bar to hire locally. Over 1,000 applicants are screened for a large pool of opportunities that range from seasonal and part-time, to year-round and full-time positions. In addition, the Alliance encourages residents to visit our office for career counseling and resume building advice from our professional counsellors at Kingsborough Community College.

clean up

Recognizing the need for a cleaner Coney Island for our residents, businesses and visitors.  The Alliance has been providing supplemental sanitation in the Amusement District since inception and expanded in 2016 to providing sanitation services on Mermaid Avenue. As an area heavily trafficked by pedestrians and visitors, there is a great need to supplement the services provided by NYC Department of Sanitation. Some issues that we have observed is that trash receptacles were overflowing, sidewalks had to be swept and excess weeds grew in our tree pits as well as issues of illegal dumping and graffiti. With our goal of improving the quality of life for our residents and merchants, we hired a supplemental sanitation team, as well as a safety ambassador for Mermaid Avenue who assisted in addressing these issues to foster a cleaner and safer environment for our residents and merchants.

community programming

We love the buzz of excitement and increased engagement with our residents and local merchants! We plan and organize community events to be a fun opportunity for residents to get out of their homes and enjoy quality time as a family and as neighbors, as well as encourage local spending for merchants. There’s nothing more joyful than a community that is joyful, laughing and enjoying quality time with one another for free!
